Save Money Safely With Portable Home Generators

It is in the minds and interest of everybody that keeping ahold of extra money is one of the top priorities of many households. There are many ways to save hard earned cash. Portable home generators are one way to put a dent in those dreaded utility bills.

When purchasing a portable home generator, one should always remember that safety comes first. Generators are a great way to save money, with the use of them by residential homes on a rapid incline. If not installed and used properly though, they could cause many problems.

Many individuals think of generators as just another household appliance, like a refrigerator or stove. One should always remember that generators are of another breed.

When generators are running, they omit a deadly gas called carbon monoxide. Never use generators in enclosed areas. If fatal fumes build up, neither open windows or fans can provide enough fresh air. Always have a battery-powered carbon monoxide detector in the vicinity of the generator and test it regularly.

Home wiring the generators is another issue that people run into. Unless you are a licensed electrician, get all permits necessary before even thinking about wiring it. Make sure to follow the owner’s manual for specific guidelines, also.

Never use a generator until it has been safely grounded as it can cause an electric shock. Grounding is usually very simple, refer to the owner’s manual. There are minimum sizes and materials covered in the manual that will give one the proper grounding.

If using a gasoline powered generator, remember that its vapors are extremely flammable. Always allow the engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling it. Fuel spilled on hot engine parts could cause them to ignite. If the generator is not going to be used for thirty days, don’t forget to stabilize the gas with a fuel stabilizer.

Never operate a generator under wet conditions, as they produce powerful voltage. Take precaution to protect the generator from rain or snow. Try operating it on a flat, dry surface under a canopy-like structure. Always make sure hands are dry before touching a generator.

Do not overload the generator. Operating more appliances or equipment than the output rating of the generator can cause a fire. Always prioritize the household needs, and remember to turn off all powered equipment before shutting down the generator.

Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. It can cause what is known as backfiring, which can pose an electrocution risk to utility workers or anyone else using the same utility transformer.

Generator usages are increasing at a fast rate. By installing and operating a portable generator properly and safely, households can reap the benefits year after year.
